When Whoopi Goldberg discusses age gaps in relationships, she speaks from experience.
The "View" co-host, 68, revealed on Thursday's episode of the talk show that one of her most recent relationships was with a man 40 years her senior.
The revelation came during a segment about the trailer for "The Idea of You," a romantic comedy where Anne Hathaway plays a 40-year-old woman who develops a relationship with a singer in his 20s, played by Nicholas Galitzine. Goldberg pushed back on criticism of the age gap depicted in the film, noting "it's a movie" and telling critics, "If you don't want to see the movie, don't see the movie."
This led to a discussion among the co-hosts about age gaps in relationships, with Goldberg saying she has dated men older and younger than her. "Your age is not what's going to get me into your arms," she said. "It's not your age that I'm concerned about unless you're under 18."
But when co-host Joy Behar suggested a "big gap" in a relationship can be "problematic," and that a 60-year-old dating an 80-year-old could be "a little hairy," Goldberg didn't seem to agree.

"I'm just going to say this to you: one of the last relationships I had, he was 40 years older than me," she revealed.
Goldberg didn't provide details about the relationship or specify when she dated the older man. But the comments appeared to fit with Amara Skye, Goldberg's granddaughter, in 2022 telling a fellow contestant on the reality show "Claim to Fame" that Goldberg "had a boyfriend that was, like, 90 years old, and she used to go hang out with him." According to Skye, the "Sister Act" star dated "some old white man named John, and he was like a billionaire," and she "used to sneak off and have (sex) appointments, randomly."

Skye later said in an interview that "no one knew about that" and she wasn't sure if Goldberg would be okay with her sharing it. "But my grandma's really, really cool and pretty open," she said. "So, I don't think I did so bad."
Goldberg previously said in a 2021 segment on "The View" that she stopped dating younger men after going out with someone who had never heard of The Beatles.
"You have to know that when you're going younger, there's a lot of information that you have to impart, and sometimes it's tiring," she said.
